The tilt switch is the #1 most commonly replaced part on any propane patio heater — and most people don't even know it exists until it fails. It's a small safety device that cuts gas flow if the heater tips over. Inside is a simple ball-and-contact mechanism: when the heater is upright, the circuit is complete and gas flows. When the heater tilts, the ball rolls away from the contact and gas is immediately cut off.
Over time, corrosion, vibration, or wear causes the mechanism to fail in the "open" position — meaning the heater acts like it's always tipped over, even when standing straight. The result: the heater lights briefly when you hold the knob, then shuts off the moment you release it.
This genuine OEM tilt switch is sourced directly from Gardensun and fits most patio heaters. Easy swap, no special tools needed.
Pro tip: Do the cross-wire test first to confirm — unplug both tilt switch connectors and touch them together. If the heater then stays lit, this part is your fix.
